Sandboarding in Morocco: The Dunes an Hour From the Surf

If you've searched "sandboarding Morocco", the good news is that you don't need a Sahara expedition to try it. The Timlalin Dunes sit about an hour north of Agadir on the coast road — golden slopes rolling almost to the Atlantic, between the surf villages and Tamri — and they've become the region's sand-surfing playground. We run a surf hostel in Tamraght, twenty minutes down that same road, and this is the honest guide: what the dunes are like, what tours include, and where we fit in (and don't).

Where the dunes are

Timlalin is the name to know: a field of proper golden dunes just inland from the coast road, roughly between Taghazout and Tamri. Close enough that a half-day covers it; scenic enough that the drive itself — ocean on one side, argan hills on the other — is part of the trip. This is the same stretch of coast our guests already know from the Imsouane day trip, which passes right by.

What sandboarding is actually like

Think snowboarding's laid-back cousin: you wax the board, walk up the dune, and ride down — then do it again until your legs vote against the climb. The sand is soft, falls don't hurt, and the learning curve is fast. Surfers tend to pick it up in a couple of runs; the balance transfers directly, minus the paddling and the sets.

Typical tours run as half-day trips of about five hours: pickup from Agadir, Taghazout or Tamraght, the coast drive, a safety briefing, boards provided, and a couple of hours on the slopes. Some pair the dunes with a canyon stop.

First-timer tips

• Go early or late. Midday sand gets genuinely hot, and the low sun is when the dunes look their best anyway.
• Closed shoes or barefoot — sandals are the worst of both worlds. Sunglasses earn their keep on a windy day.
• Bring water and nothing precious. Sand finds every pocket, every zip, every phone.
• Temper the video expectations. Dune runs are shorter than they look on film — the joy is in the repetition, not one endless ride.

Timlalin or the Sahara?

If you are picturing the giant ergs of Merzouga: those exist — eight-plus hours inland — and they are spectacular. But for a board day from the surf coast, Timlalin is the sane choice: an hour instead of a road trip, dunes big enough to feel real, and ocean air instead of deep-desert heat. Save the Sahara for a journey of its own; sandboard here between surf sessions.
