Surf and Rock Climbing in Morocco: One Base, Two Sports
How to combine surf and rock climbing in Morocco from a single base: Atlantic waves on foot, guided Anti-Atlas climbing days with all gear, and real prices.
· 3 min
Surf and rock climbing in Morocco usually means two trips: the coast for the waves, then Todra or the High Atlas for the rock, with a long drive in between. The south has a better-kept version — an Atlantic beach village with the Anti-Atlas mountains in day-trip range, so the same week holds both sports from one bed. We run Azul Berg, a surf and climbing hostel in Tamraght, and as far as we know we're the only place in the area built around exactly this combination.
Why this corner of Morocco works for both
The ingredients rarely coexist this tightly. Tamraght sits in front of the sandy beginner surf beaches, ten minutes from Taghazout's famous points, with consistent Atlantic swell from September to April. Behind the coast, the Anti-Atlas foothills hold sun-warmed natural rock that climbs well all through the months when Europe's crags are cold and wet.
Winter — the season everyone comes for the waves — is also prime climbing weather here: dry, mild, blue. That overlap is the whole trick.
The climbing day, honestly described
A guided climbing day with us looks like this: pickup from Agadir, Tamraght or Taghazout, a drive into the Anti-Atlas, and a session on natural rock routes matched to your level — from first-time initiation and basic technique to routes that keep intermediate and advanced climbers honest.
Everything technical is provided, every time:
- climbing shoes
- harness
- helmet
- ropes
The real prices, from the rock climbing experience page:
| Guided climbing | Price per person |
|---|---|
| Half day | €65 |
| Full day | €85 |
| Climbing pack, 2 nights (sessions, gear, meals, room, transport) | €280 |
| Climbing pack, 6 nights | €590 |
One thing we won't print: the exact crag names. Like most operators on this coast, we keep our spots quiet — good rock with no queue is part of what you're paying for. You'll see where you're going from the van window.
The surfing half
The other sport is on foot. Tamraght's beach, Imourane, is the learning wave of this coast — soft, sandy and forgiving — with progression spots a few minutes away and the advanced points near Taghazout a short drive up the road. Our complete guide to surfing in Morocco covers every spot and season; the practical point is that surf mornings cost you zero transport time.
How a combined week actually fits together
We deliberately don't run a fixed timetable, because the ocean doesn't. The forecast decides: when the swell is working, you surf; when it drops or the wind turns, that's a mountain day. Guests who come for a week typically get plenty of both — and the contrast is the point. Salt water one day, warm rock the next, and your shoulders complaining about different things each morning.
The climbing pack makes the combination simple: guided climbing sessions, all gear, your room, homemade breakfasts and lunches, and transport — and mixing in surf days is exactly what our packs are built for. Both sports welcome complete beginners: coaching and equipment are always included.
When to come
| Months | The surf | The climbing |
|---|---|---|
| Sept – April | Consistent Atlantic swell — the main season | Dry, mild and sunny — prime conditions |
| May – August | Smaller and gentler — good for learning | Warmer inland — sessions start early |
The winter overlap is what makes this trip work: while European rock is wet and cold, the Anti-Atlas is at its best, and the swell is running. One flight covers the season both sports are waiting for.
Who this week suits
- Complete beginners in either sport — initiation and coaching are the default, not an upsell
- Surfers who are rock-curious — try climbing without committing a whole trip to it
- Climbers escaping the European winter — warm rock in December, waves on rest days
- Mixed groups — sessions are guided per level, so nobody holds anybody back
Booking it
If a week of waves and rock from one base sounds right, put your dates in here — we confirm availability the same day. And for the questions this page deliberately leaves open, or anything about your level and group, message us or ask on WhatsApp: the owners answer personally.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need experience to climb or surf in Morocco?
- No. Our packs are built for complete beginners in both sports — climbing sessions start with initiation and basic technique on natural rock, surf lessons run on soft sandy beaches, and certified guides and instructors handle the rest. Intermediate and advanced climbers get routes at their level too.
- Where is the rock climbing near Agadir?
- In the Anti-Atlas mountains, within day-trip range — pickup from Agadir, Tamraght or Taghazout is included in our climbing days. Like most operators here, we keep the exact crags to ourselves; you'll see them from the van.
- What climbing gear do I need to bring?
- Nothing. Shoes, harness, helmet and ropes are all provided on every guided session, whether you book a single day or a full pack.
- Can I combine surfing and climbing in one trip?
- Yes — that's the whole idea. From one base in Tamraght you surf the beach mornings and take guided climbing days in the mountains, letting the forecast decide the mix. Our packs cover gear, meals, room and transport for both.
